Health & Safety Solutions For General Motors

Coventry Scale Company were called by General Motors to solve a problem with their European distribution centre in Luton.

Their massive distribution system although completely computerised and 90% automated required a large amount of staff on their picking lines, each operator having picked the spares required and added to the designated distribution container then manually places the container onto a computerised track system.

Manually lifting each container was often resulting in the injury to the operator, mainly back problems due to the overloading of the containers.   General motors were subsequently face with lawsuits from there employees.

Coventry Scale Company suggested installing a simple weighing platform at each weighing station the same size as the picking container.   Within this platform we installed a traffic light system and an audible buzzer.   Each weighing platform was then calibrated to accurate the traffic lights to red and audible sound when the weight on the platform reached the health and safety requirements of 17kg.

These scales had to be robust enough to withstand continuous heavy use in an industrial environment without compromising accuracy and be cost effective due to the high number of weigh platforms required.

After demonstrating the bespoke samples weighing scales built to General Motor's specifications we were fortunate enough to receive an order for over 400 scales.
