Coventry Scale Company a ‘Chip off the old Block’ as it Rescues Guinness World Record Attempt at Resorts World, Birmingham

Coventry Scale Company came to the rescue for the official adjudication of the world’s largest fish and chips record attempt at Robata Restaurant, Resorts World, Birmingham, this week.

The Guinness World Record attempt for the largest serving of fish and chips was smashed by the Midlands Restaurant, and the Coventry based industrial weighing company was there with its top of the range, industrial scales to step in for the official weighing after the fish was found to be so big only specialist scales would do and the existing supplier was nowhere to be seen.

Tom Marren, Managing Director, Coventry Scale Company, explains: ‘We were delighted to be part of this momentous occasion, even if we did only have 45 minutes to turn things around! The Guinness World Record adjudication is a rigorous process, so they had to ensure the accuracy of the scales. The extent of the attempt meant that only specialist scales were up to the task. Thanks to the expertise of our team, the scales were approved, with just minutes to go, and the world record attempt was a huge success.’

The Robata’s fish and chips serving weighed in at 82.73kg, compared with the current record of 64.89kg set six years previously.

Ian Bennett, Operations Director RWB, continues: ‘Months of planning and logistics went into the attempt to realise the Guinness world record for the largest ever serving of fish and chips.  ‘On the actual day, and only a few hours before the attempt started, we were made aware of a serious problem that would have killed the attempt. The scales, that were critical in securing the record, weren’t big enough. The supplier we used was contacted but couldn’t help as they’d finished work for the day.

‘We contacted Coventry Scale Company and, within minutes of the call they were sorting out scales to do the job, including calibration and the necessary certification, crucial in securing the record. In just under an hour the scales arrived and were set up whilst the fish and chips were being cooked.

‘We cracked the record, and in no short part to Coventry Scale Company! Incredible service and I can’t thank them enough for their fantastic support and positive attitude to help solve our problem. Without them we’d have had an embarrassing situation on our hands with press and public attending the event.’

Weighing up Coventry Rugby Club players

Weighing up the players at Coventry Rugby has become a whole lot easier this season, thanks to a donation from Coventry Scale Company Ltd.

The company, who supplies industrial weighing equipment, has provided the national league one club with a medical weighing scale, which the coaching team are using weekly, to check the fitness levels of the squad.
Tom Marren from Coventry Scale Company Ltd, said: “We’re proud to sponsor Coventry Rugby and donating the scale to assist with the strength and conditioning of the squad seemed like a natural link.”

It’s important to weigh the players, before and after games, to monitor hydration levels and ensure that weight lost during the game can then be replaced with fluids. In addition, with this scale the club is able to measure the players’ height, body mass index, and even bone density.

Tom added: “Having followed the club for many years and played grassroots rugby myself in the city, we’re looking forward to supporting the club throughout what is turning out to be an exciting season.”

In addition to medical scales, Coventry Scale Company Ltd provides industrial weighing solutions for a number of industries including automotive, food production, agriculture, laboratory and logistics.

Next generation take on Coventry Scale Company Ltd

A Coventry based weighing scale company has a brand new management team in place after its original owners recently retired. Coventry Scale Company was ran as a partnership for 40 years before employees, Tom Marren and Neil Keegan, bought the business in November, setting it up as a limited company.

Tom and Neil, who themselves have clocked up more than 40 years service between them, have played an active role in running the business for the last five years, so buying the company together was a natural next step.
In addition, Tom is helping to keep the business a family affair because it’s his dad, Joe Marren, who set up Coventry Scale Company with partner, Richard Regan, in 1975.

Joe and Richard started out supplying and servicing cash registers and weighing scales for the city’s butchers and greengrocers. They grew the business over the next four decades, moving into supplying and maintaining industrial equipment for companies such as Jaguar Land Rover, Unipart UTL and Brose. Neil and Tom both joined the company as apprentices, Neil started in 1992, before Tom came on board in 1997.

Tom Marren comments: “The work my dad and Richard have done over the last 40 years has built a successful business, giving us a great platform to work from. It’s an exciting time for the weighing industry because technology has developed that rapidly in recent years that we’re now able to write software that can provide a solution for any weighing scenario. We’re really looking forward to growing this part of the business, taking on new customers, while continuingto work with all of our existing customers.”CovScaleCo
